'It is a beautiful thing, the destruction of words'
Winston's "comrade" Syme is talking about the process of creating the 11th dictionary of Newspeak.
In the making of a new language you would think that they add new words to improve the language, but instead, they 'destroy' words.
Syme continue's to ramble the uselessness of verbs and adjectives and antonyms; how the word 'bad' is useless, just say ungood, there needn't be a whole new word.
There is something to this, there is meaning to it, but I can't exactly grasp what it is.
I know whatever this idea is applys to today's world as well. Words are absolutely shortnening.
People are becomes less critical- me included. Complex ideas are hard. Ig this way of lingustics- one which discourages verbs, adjectives and antonyms, promotes simple-mindedness.
Being dumb. The dumber people are, they easier they are to control. And the less easy it is to critisise, the less likely it will occur.
There is something to this. I hope I can find the words to express exactly what Orwell is trying to say about this society. Bigg Brother has a hold on language itself, the medium through which we express ourselves and connect with the society.
Found something else. Syme talks about how the aim is to make ThoughtCrime impossible. He says it best 'the purpose is to narrow the range of thought'. This will be done as there will be no words to even express it. Only what is needed to be spoken, can be expressed.
He knows that in the far future even the slogan will change, 'how can they say "freedom is slvaery" when the concept of freedom isn't even there?'. It's interesting because right after that Winston thinks 'one of these days, he will be vapourized'.
Through Syme's ramble, your're thinking that this guy is ridiculous, his thoughts are riduculous, can he not understand what he is saying is terrible?
However even this way of thinking in THEIR world, this visonary way of thinking of the future is incredibly smart. Even if you are complecent to the system, it is still dangerous to be smart like this.
This chapter is all about stupidty. Syme talks about the language working to become more effective by becoming less expressive. Instead of bad being a word- just say ungood! (reminds me of the wrd 'unalive' that ppl use today) What's th worth of 'excellent' and 'splendid'- just say! doubleplusgood! lol. This is the way he thinks. 'There is beauty to the destruction of words' he says. Just when you start thinking of this guy as some ridiculous puppet of BB- which he still kinda is, he reveals something profound. The language- Newspeak- is evolving to erradicate thoughtcrime.
"How can you have a slogan of 'freedom is slvaery' when the concept of freedom is abolished.'
How can you critise when the language itself doesn't have the words to describe it? It's so trapping for a 'free-thinker'. Furthermore, how can the ind even create such a concept when you don't have the words to bring it into existence? Reminds me of what Bo Burnham once said, they've coloinised everywhere on Earth, they now want to colonise your mind. Funnily enough earlier on in the book Owell writes 'nothing is yours except for the few centimeters inside your skull'. Of course, in this world, BB is trying to capture that to now. However, instead of despairing about this, Syme thinks it's brilliant. He's so close, yet so far to getting it, Winston wonders how one day Syme will get himself vapurised. He is smart in the sense of understanding the purpose of everything he is doing, but because he thinks so highly of BB, he thinks he is safe. He doesn't understand intellect is not welcome in BB's world. Anyway, Then walks in Parson. An example of the very stupid puppet BB wants everyone to become. He boasts about how his kids handed over a man to the police because he had funnily shoes- which of course must mean he is a foreigner- therefore an enemy- therefore...must be vapourized. He is so boastful of it. Later on there is a television announcement of everything great BB has done, 'more' of this and 'more' of that! The announcement talks about how Chocolate rations have gone up to 20%. Winston observes how dumb Parson is- he is looking at the tv with optimisms, however he has no sense of the weight of the numbers or the fact that the rations had just dropped this morning and now they are taking it up again. all Parson understands- or maybe he cares to understand is "MORE". He will live. He won't be vapourized.
Omg this man connot fot the live of god say 1 nice things about women.
women are either silly or stupid. Always dumb. Bro is peak delulu. Specially during The Hate
when he acts like the women with brown hair is the devil incarnate but the ither guy next to her
who can't even bat an eye to Winston for more than 0.000001 seconds is some secret genius
who UnDeRsTaNds Winston. Dude. Apparantley he has a wife. Perhaps all these ideas towards women come from her.
He said that she was the most 'stupid, vulgur and empty-minded' person he had ever encountered so...
